Aquaculture Education and Research Center

Exotic fish! horseshoe crabs! Supersoakers?? Find out what these 3 things
have in common by taking part in AERC's outreach programs on aquatic
conservation. Aimed at all ages, the Aquaculture Education and Research
Center (AERC) programs are giving audiences all over the seacoast a close up
look at some very interesting creatures.

Chris Baker, AERC's Outreach Coordinator, is taking his live animal show on
the road to camps, YMCA's, day care centers, classrooms, and retirement
homes. He brings horseshoe crabs, fish from around the world, clams and
other shellfish that are passed around in see-through containers. "People
love to see the animals up close," says Baker, "it's a great diversion on a
rainy camp day."

During the hour-long program, Baker uses a variety of visual displays to
demonstrate the adaptations of sometimes bizarre aquatic animals. "It's
amazing how fish adapt to suvive in different situations," says Baker. "The
archer fish, for example, feeds on insects that live out of the water, and
the only way to catch them is to spit at them! To demonstrate this cool
adaptation, I have a couple of supersoakers that mimic the spitting archer
fish. The kids have fun while learning something neat."

He also talks about different types of shellfish, explaining local
conservation and research efforts on clams, oysters and mussels. "I set up
the shellfish in an open tub with sand and water, so you can see the clams
dig - It's great to be able to show things to people that they normally
wouldn't be able to see." But watch out, because they squirt. Baker
explains, "It took us most of the day at Market Square Day to realize what
we thought was a leaking tank was really the clams launching water at
everybody."

AERC's outreach programs are the result of grants from the Greater
Piscataqua Community Foundation and the New Hampshire Estuaries Project.

For information on programs, contact AERC at 603/926-1650.

Stonewall Farm

Our goal is to provide place-based learning opportunities at a facility that is beautifully unique and teeming with possibilitiesThe topics we teach here at the farm cover a range of subjects. Cultural history explores the history of this farm which dates back to the early 1800’s and the role of sheep on the surrounding landscape. Ice harvesting is also a historically based program that brings the magic of ice cutting to life for students. We have an observation bee hive and an apiarist in the education department and we run many programs with a gardening and agriculture focus. New this year we have a gardener who has a background in education and is planning to open the greenhouse for learning opportunities through the winter. In addition we have a wetlands program, dairy program, winter ecology program, chicken program, maple sugaring program and an extensive homestead arts program. Finally, we have developed a team building curriculum that includes challenges on our low ropes course – a great opportunity to develop teamwork and communication skills.

Please take the opportunity to think about how Stonewall Farm can enhance your child’s learning experience and call or email one of us to share your ideas. Our website is wonderfully complete and may help you to understand more about our facility and resources – www.stonewallfarm.org  Education Department, Stonewall Farm, Keene, NH, 603.357.7278

SpiralScouts International is a new, unique scouting program for girls and boys and their families. SpiralScouts is unique in its focus on ecology, respect for diversity, and balance of gender energies.  Its philosophy is rooted in Wicca and other Earth-centered spiritual paths, but it is open to ALL.  Scouts earn badges and award pins while learning vital outdoor and life skills, meeting new friends, and developing their potential.

Meeting topics vary monthly, but generally center around badge work, community service, holidays, or outdoor adventures.  Meeting activities include crafts, sharing, drumming and/or singing, and other things scouts and their families are interested in.  Interested families are invited to attend a meeting to decide if SpiralScouts is for them before registering.
When: Third Sunday of each month

Where: As a Circle, scouts' families take turns hosting meetings.  Please contact a Co-Leader for more information.  You can also join our message board at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/New_Hampshire_SpiralScouts for meeting updates, registration forms, handbooks, etc.

Retreat Center and Family Camp

Medomak Retreat Center and Family Camp provides an ideal setting for families and/or organizations to meet and focus on the environment, the building of community, education, arts, science…and have fun. We would look to work with you to develop a week long outdoor educational program that will include water studies, environmental education, history, writing workshops, art, and skill development in outdoor activities such as archery, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing and more.

Medomak is located in Midcoast Maine, halfway between Augusta and Camden, along Route 220 in the small town of Washington.  The Camp and Retreat Center sit just above Washington Lake, discretely tucked amidst cool pine forest and warm blueberry fields.  The Retreat Center’s turn of the century lodge and barn are perfect places for conducting seminars and workshops in the summer time.  At the Retreat Center we have 20 cabins (both private and dorm style) which sleep up to 70 guests per night. The Family Camp can accommodate 12 families each week in dorm style cabins. Additionally, at Camp we have meeting space in our barn and farmhouse. Forget typical camp food: at both sites chefs prepare and serve three healthy family-style meals daily.

We would be happy to mail you or your homeschool group brochures which will give you a better idea of our site. More information can also be found on our website, www.medomakcamp.com
